After receiving comments on Penciljack forums, I decided to modify the drawing a little. Here’s the new version with the modified hands and other minor tweaks.

About the process a little: The red lines were the original sketch, done all digitally (which I rarely do). They were actually black and then turned light grey, but I changed that for this image. Then came the black outline and finally the purple/violet lines to mark the black areas. The next step was to fill these with black and apply color.
You can also see the difference between the original sketch and the redrawn arm here quite well.
I’ve been pondering on making this the cover for Moon Jade Angel #2, but I think that might be too different from the first one. I don’t know, just a thought.
As you can see, the pencils were quite different. The guy in front was meant to be the main focus, but as I was trying to fix the anatomy/proportions, I kept on making weird tangents with the monster’s legs or back, so in the end I scrapped him, deciding the beast would be more interesting.
Ended up adding wings instead and building some basic 1-point perspective.

I started with the wings (took me 3 or 4 attempts to get them to look fine) and then kind of on a whim, I did the shadow cast by the right wing on the beast’s back. That sort of made the whole click in my mind and fall into place (before that I had no clear idea of where the light should be coming from). From then on it was just a matter of sticking to that and building the background around the grid (which got partially reworked too).

The larger version of the full image can be found in the previous post.
